Category: ‘Half-day’ or ‘Full-day, local’ tour
Highlights/features – Just to the northeast of Canberra is Lake George, which has a fascinating natural history spanning over a million years. While the lake is ephemeral now at times in the ice ages it was full and overflowing, and many parts of the paleo-lake floor (which are now pasture) bear witness to this wet phase. We discuss the geologic history of Lake George and the vegetation surrounding it, as indicated by fossil pollen in its sediments.
Drive time from centre of Canberra – about 30 minutes.
Length/track – This is mainly a car tour to various spots around Lake George
Terrain – Lake George is bounded by an escarpment active uplift block on the west side and hills to the east
This tour can also take in a cafe, winery, pub or art gallery on the ‘Half-day’ tour option but for a more relaxed pace then select the ‘Full-day, local’ tour option. There are some excellent wineries nearby.
